Club History
The Great Lakes Border Terrier Club came into being in 1984, when a group of Midwest BT enthusiasts, led by John and Laurale Stern(WI) , decided to organize a regional club, after seeing the success of California’s newly formed Border Terrier Fanciers in the West. The preliminary organizational meeting took place at the home of Carolyn Dostal, Chicago, IL, on Saturday, December 1st, 1984, at 7 p.m., in conjunction with the International Kennel Club shows of that weekend. A constitution and by-laws was proposed as well as a name for the club and its newsletter. After several months, our fist elected officers were: John Stern (WI), president; David Kline (IN), vice president; Laurale Stern (WI), secretary, and Bernice Swoboda (WI), treasurer. The first Board of Officers had members from Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
Our first ‘Fun Day’ was held on Saturday, October 12, 1985, at the home of Nancy and Chuck Hughes in West Chicago, Illinois. The Hughes had a large piece of land and generously allowed us to put on this event, which included a puppy match, go-to-ground, obstacle and agility course, terrier racing, a costume competition and other fun games, plus another club meeting. We also sponsored or supported three A.W.T.A. earthdog trials, at the home of Barbara and JoAnn Steinberg in Antioch, Illinois, at the home of Carol Sowders in Allenton, Michigan and at the Racine Kennel Club in Racine, Wisconsin. At that time, A.K.C. had not yet offered titling for earthdogs, so the American Working Terrier Association was the official earthdog titling organization.
At the end of the first year of the club, we had 80 members from 10 states and Canada. Over the years, the GLBTC has hosted two national specialties, at Grayslake, Illinois in 1989, and in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1994. The club has had its ebbs and tides, as do all clubs, but has persevered and survived to the present. The recent ‘Fun Day’ on November 8th at the K9 Obedience Club in Menomonee Falls, WI, drew about 30 club members. There was a manners presentation, obstacle and agility work, earthdog introduction, grooming seminar, costume competition, photographer, great potluck food, a fabulous raffle and a club meeting. John and I are thrilled to see this increased enthusiasm and excitement after 28 years of club organization.
